Dermal Filler Safety & Warning Signs
Dermal fillers can cause common effects such as swelling and bruising and rare but serious complications including vascular occlusion. Choose an appropriately licensed clinician, understand the emergency plan and seek immediate help for severe pain, skin colour change, visual symptoms or stroke-like signs.

What are the risks and urgent warning signs?
Common effects include bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and itching. Less common problems include infection, nodules, inflammation, migration and tissue injury. The most serious risk is unintended injection into a blood vessel, which can cause skin necrosis, visual impairment, blindness or stroke and requires immediate action.
- Confirm the treating professional and facility are appropriately licensed
- Ask to see the sealed, labelled product and retain the treatment record
- Avoid needle-free filler devices and never buy filler for self-injection
- Disclose active skin inflammation, infection, bleeding disorders, severe allergies and previous filler
- Know the clinic's emergency response and after-hours contact route before treatment
