Cold sores before lip filler: disclose the history early
A history of cold sores belongs in the conversation before lip filler, even when the lips look clear that day. Tell the clinician about previous episodes and any current tingling, blister or sore. Do not turn a cosmetic appointment into a trial of borrowed preventive medication.

Bring a useful episode history
Explain how past episodes started, where they appeared and whether a previous procedure seemed to precede one. Mention a past diagnosis, any testing and the treatments you were actually prescribed. The AAD specifically includes cold-sore history among information to disclose before fillers. You do not need to prove the cause yourself or label every lip bump before asking for an assessment.
Let the clinician decide about timing and prevention
Contact the treating team before attending if a sore or warning sensation develops. Ask whether the elective procedure should be postponed and who will assess the lip problem. If preventive treatment is considered, the prescriber needs to match it to your history and other medicines. An online schedule, a friend’s tablets or a familiar product name does not establish the right plan for you.

Do not diagnose every new symptom as a cold sore
After a procedure, explain new symptoms promptly rather than assuming they repeat an old infection. Severe unusual pain, concerning colour change or visual symptoms need urgent medical assessment. A previous cold-sore diagnosis does not rule out a different complication. Seek medical care for a sore near the eye or extensive painful lesions. This article provides neither an antiviral prescription nor a clearance to proceed with lip filler.

Common questions
Should I mention cold sores when none are visible?
Yes. Previous episodes can affect the assessment.
Can I follow someone else’s preventive tablets?
No. Ask the responsible prescriber for individual advice.
Is a new painful lip lesion automatically herpes?
No. A clinician must assess the symptoms.
